Sugar Loaf has a wonderful historical background and is a unique community of craftspeople and artisans with studios and shops housed in original barns and buildings dating back to the 1700’s. This picturesque “Arts & Crafts Village” is located in the midst of apple orchards and horse farms. In fact, the sire of all American standard bred horses, Hambletonian, was born here. Sugar Loaf Mountain, which inspired the name for the hamlet, was once a sacred burial ground for the Minisink Indians and was rumored to be the hideout of Loyalist sympathizer Claudius Smith. Today, it is a very popular hiking destination.
